At 3:05 CST one of the few remaining regularly scheduled American passenger trains pulled away from its terminal. AMTRAK Train Number 5 departed Chicago's Union station, inched through one of the busiest switching yards in the United States, gathered speed and headed west. Before it was finished, the California Zephyr would travel through seven states, thirty-six cities, twenty-one tunnels, five canyons, three mountain ranges and some of the most spectacular scenery in North America. The California Zephyr would arrive in Oakland, California two movies, three time zones, eight meals, 53 hours and 2425 miles later. This twenty minute video captures part of that journey.
